I think it depends on the industry you are in and how you wear your hair. If it is pulled up in a greasy old man ponytail (you know the guys who have em) then no it will never be professional. If you can pull off long hair in a style that will be flattering and clean, then you may be able to get away with it.
I've personally met a couple of younger men who have both long hair and full beards who look clean cut in a dress shirt and tie.
Usually an employeer will have some kind of ';no hair that touches the shirt collar'; policy if they are trying to eliminate long hair. If you're not certain and going in for an interview, just style it as professionally as possible and ask the person giving the interview. ';Would this hairstyle be approriate for work should I get the position?'; will get you the answer you need.Is there such thing as a long formal hair style?
Generally speaking for men, it is more acceptable today than it was 10 years ago. Most importantly, it comes down to the overall presentation. Is it neat? Is it distracting from a professional persona? How do you carry yourself?
Depends on the industry and on the company culture.
I wouldn't expect a PR rep from a wall street firm or medical company or an insurance company to have long hair. But an automotive parts manufacturer, music industry company, recreational sports gear company, clothing company, travel industry.... At the same time, some really sharp people tend to break a few rules and can pull it off.
In any case, a short, prototypical business haircut can increase your chances ot getting a job. Whichever way you go (happy medium?) spend the money and get a good cut.
Being that you are a male a clean cut is always more professional and appealing. There is no professional long hairstyle for guys. In my opinion you should cut your hair if you want to be taken serious.
