How do you prevent tangles on curly hair?

My son has curly hair that she got from her father. It touches his shoulders and it a little layered. His hair looks puffy. He is 11 and doesn't care what it looks like. It gets tangled when he sleeps. I tried using detanglers but they don't work. How do you prevent tangles on curly hair?

Use a leave-in conditioner.
