Straight is very in style right now. Also, a lot of curly haired people don't know how to define their curls, so they end up a big, messy, frizzy afro! They straighten it to calm it all down.
It is just the style right now to have straight hair. Actually at the moment it is kind of going into wavy hair, so you should see more of that around. But yes, a good deal of women with surly hair straighten it.
